Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Andy Stochansky grew up in Toronto steeped in music from everywhere — his father worked at CBC Radio, his grandfathers led church choirs, the house always full of sound. He discovered percussion at age four, taking over a band’s bongos at a cousin’s wedding and not putting them down all night.
He spent seven years as Ani DiFranco’s touring drummer — 150+ shows a year — before launching a solo career praised from the start. His 1999 debut Radio Fusebox was ranked among the year’s finest. He’s recorded and performed alongside Jonathan Richman, the Indigo Girls, Janis Ian, Jane Siberry, and John Gorka.
After signing with RCA Victor, he released Five Star Motel (2002) then 100 (2004), produced by Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls. His song “Shine” hit #1 in Australia. He co-wrote for Goo Goo Dolls, Dragonette, Lola Lennox, and Lee DeWyze, placing music in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and topping Billboard rock charts.
He plays piano, saxophone, guitar, bouzouki, accordion, and uilleann pipes. His influences span folk, free jazz, and electronica. Poetry of Birds (2025) is a return to his own voice — personal, spare, and deeply felt.
